Hello! Listen it has been so crazy and such a busy time for me. The last few months I’ve been applying for colleges, scholarships, and internships. When the dust settles I will write more about my college planning – Honestly, that probably will not be until this summer. I want to provide the best advice from my experiences before I start giving actual advice. I promise more of my trials and tribulations on college admission process will come.
Anyways, one of my New Year’s resolution is to do a service project every month until September. I would say, I would do the whole year but I am not sure what the first few months will be like when I start college. I am sure their will be community services activities but not sure when they will start so I don’t want to overcommit and be frustrated that I am not able to do something I promised myself I would do.
For January, my service project is to donate 50 pairs of socks with toiletries and an encouraging note for the homeless. (Even though I completed this project in January – I wasn’t able to deliver to Happy Helpers for the Homeless until February.) My favorite non-profit is Happy Helpers for the Homeless because they have a list of projects you can do on your own if you are unable to help them in person on a regular basis. (Another reason why I like Happy Helpers for the Homeless is because Ms. Bobbi who runs it is a true gem – SO LOCAL people check out Happy Helpers for the Homeless!)
Over the course of several months, when I come across cheap socks I buy them. (I have over 50 pairs of socks to donate.) Additionally, when I travel I typically bring my own toiletries and I stockpile the ones the hotel gives me. I also ask the hotel cleaning crew for more. I didn’t have enough hotel toiletries for all of the socks I had so I went to Target and the Dollar Tree and bought extras.
Here’s how I grouped the toiletries with the sock pairs:
- Shampoos and Conditioners
- Chap Sticks (or other lip balms) with Moisturizing lotions, or facial tissues, or bar soap
- Toothbrushes with Toothpaste (Not Shown)
***Helpful Tip – The homeless like to travel light so the trial size toiletries are typically their preference. So, when you are traveling think about collecting the toiletries and donating.
