This year for spring break, I made it a personal goal to visit a state that I’ve never been to before because I’m trying to visit all 50 states before I turn 18. My mom saw a reasonably priced flight to Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma is a state that I haven’t been to so we decided to go! To be completely honest, I didn’t expect to have as much fun as I did. The week before spring break, my friends would ask, “Where are you going for spring break Natalyn?” I would tell them that I’m going to Oklahoma City and they would say, “Oklahoma City? What’s even in Oklahoma?” or “Oklahoma is where crazy people live.” I’m here to tell you that for one: Oklahoma City is cute and while there may not be a lot of adventurous things to do, the food is amazing and two: Everyone in Oklahoma is actually really sweet and very welcoming. So, if you have ever thought about Oklahoma being irrelevant, boring or anything like that, I’m here to prove you wrong.
Hotel:
My mom, sister, nonnie (grandma), great grandma and I stayed in the 21c Museum Hotel in Oklahoma City. As you can tell by the name, this hotel also features an art museum which has modern and contemporary art pieces! I would honestly say that this is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in and I was so sad when we had to leave!
The overall hotel experience was very neat. We got adjoining rooms so we could all be near each other. The rooms were spacious and had a huge window. I LOVED THE WINDOWS! The bathrooms were very contemporary and spacious as well. One of my favorite things was the purple plastic penguins that were all over the place. Throughout the day they were spontaneously moved. It was exciting to see where they ended up next. I don’t have really good pictures of our rooms but please check out 21c Museum Hotel website here. My new mission is to visit all of the 21c Museum Hotels. (From my understanding they started in Louisville, KY and that’s where my dad is from!)
Museum:
The Contemporary and Modern art pieces in the hotel lobby were just stunning. All of the art was different and unique in their own ways. The art just made the atmosphere of the hotel just so fun and amusing. There were even some art pieces in the Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge! My favorite place inside the museum was the screening room. The screening room is a dark room inside the museum that always has a film playing on the big screen. There are also these dreidel chairs that you sit in while watching the film and they are so much fun! You can be sitting one of the chairs and be spinning. They were SUPER cool! (One of the films they were playing was a music montage of their home NBA team the Oklahoma Thunder. It was funny because at the time of our stay the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers were staying at our same hotel. Ummm… That was pretty amazing seeing an NBA Team come in and out of the hotel. You know a hotel is nice when it’s good enough for an NBA team to stay there!)
Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge:
This is the restaurant located in the hotel. We went to the restaurant during lunch hours and I wanted to try something a bit out of my comfort zone but they didn’t have a very wide variety of food on their menu so I just ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich. Surprisingly, the food was really good. My grilled cheese had tomato jam and lemon aioli on it and it really gave it life. My mom had the burger and loved it. My great grandma had the shrimp wraps and she didn’t like it because she had to make the wraps. Her food came with all the ingredients but the menu didn’t mention that she would have to prepare it. I think when you offer something like that you have to explain that somehow on the menu or the wait staff should let you know because she probably would’ve ordered something else had she known that. My Nonnie had the Cheese Stuffed Bratwurst and loved it! Oh, and let me not forget about the fries! They were GOOD! The only thing about the experience that was not perfect, was that the food took a bit longer than expected. As for drinks, I had the Prairie Fire, which is a non-alcoholic drink/soda, and it was really good. I thought it would be too spicy for me – It wasn’t at all! It was nicely balanced with a tiny hint of heat, I loved it!

I’m going to post a part 2 to my spring break that will talk more about the food I ate and the touristy places I visited! Stay tuned, it will be posted tomorrow.
