Synopsis:
Ruby Lee has never downloaded an iTune, heard of Facebook, nor seen a video on YouTube. Raised in rural Kansas with her mom as her best friend, she’s cozy and content. But everything changes when she and her mom move to Florida to care for her grandmother, Nana Dottie. Ruby quickly realizes she’s definitely not in Kansas anymore—the kids in her huge school are totally different…but her new life is not so bad. What is bad is the fifteen-year-feud between Ruby’s mother and grandmother that shows no signs of ending. Will Ruby have to choose between her mom and her new life, which isn’t looking so awful after all?
This story starts off in Curly Creek, Kansas. The main character Ruby and her mother Francine move to Coconut Grove, Florida so that they can help take care of her grandma after her papa Harry dies. The minute Ruby steps in Florida she automatically knows that she’s no longer in Kansas.
“Fair or not, weird or not, we’re not in Kansas anymore. And until someone gives me a pair of ruby red slippers, I have no choice but tiptoe around in my dirty converse and try not to make things even messier.”
I like Ruby! To me she’s kind and respectful of other’s feelings. I liked the fact that she had a secret talent that she didn’t realize she had. My favorite part of the book is when she went to Oscar’s Flower Shop. (I can’t give you details because it’s a Spoiler… YOU MUST READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED!)
Overall, I love this book. I like the author’s writing style and the flow of the book (meaning I didn’t get bored at any point of this book). I highly recommend this book! It’s a MUST READ!
