I have been meaning to share this… Life has been a little crazy lately but anyways, back in the spring, I had the opportunity to apply for an online public health summer course with the CDC which would allow me to learn more about public health and everything involved in the field. As I’m looking at colleges, It’s so important for me to discover more career paths and find exactly what things I’m interested in possibly studying. My dad, (a retired Air Force veteran) worked in public health his entire 20 years of active service, so I thought it was important for me to learn more about the type of work he did when he was in the military. The application process was easy although there was a written essay portion. One of the good things about this opportunity was the fact that it’s free to those who apply and are accepted, so that was really great!
After submitting my application, I heard back within a month whether or not I was accepted and I was extremely excited when they contacted me back! Out of 600 other people that applied, I got in! So, during a week in July, I went to the scheduled zoom meeting every day while also completing the assignments that went along with each day’s meetings. To be honest, the assignments were hard a bit for me at first but I soon got the hang of it and the course turned out really great. It was amazing being able to talk to other people in the field and learn about their jobs and what they like about it.
During each days meeting, we had a spin the wheel game which would pick random people to win a prize (usually CDC merch). I didn’t win on the first day but I won everyday after that which was so exciting for me (what are the odds?!). I won a water bottle, a pen/pencil/highligher, and two CDC bags. Then, after completing the course, I earned a t-shirt and a certificate! Needless to say, the summer course was amazing. I loved being able to talk to others all around the world about global health issues and other public health issues.
Here’s some pictures with my merch!:
I would definitely recommend this camp to anyone! The application process is easy, and if you live in the Atlanta area, you can apply to go in person as well! Check back for their 2023 application here!
